In the world of forensic accounting and fraud investigation, details matter and few details are more revealing than deposit slips with their supporting items. Too often, we receive account records that include only the deposit summary on the bank statement. But for forensic analysis (depending on the case), we analyze the actual source of the deposits. To understand who funded the account, how, and why, we need the documentation that supports each deposit. What Should Be Included? When providing deposit documentation for any account under review, make sure the following items are included: 1. Deposit Slips These are the forms used at the time of deposit, either in-branch or electronically, to document the total funds deposited. 2. Copies of Deposited Checks Every check or cashier’s check included in a deposit should be copied (front and back). This helps us identify: The payer The bank of origin Endorsement activity
3. Cash-In Tickets These are receipts issued when cash is deposited at a financial institution. Cash-in tickets are especially important in tracing untraceable sources of funds, as they may indicate under-the-table income, structured deposits, or attempts to obscure money origin. Why This Matters? Without these supporting items, a $50,000 deposit could be: The deposit slip alone won’t tell you but the deposited check copy or cash-in ticket might.
